Jamestown Vision
...planning for the future of our village
What is a charrette?

The term “charrette”  originated at the Ecole des Beaux Arts in Paris during the
19th century. While students frantically put finishing touches on their work as
projects were due, proctors circulated a cart, or “charrette,” to collect final
drawings. Today, the charrette is utilized as a collaborative public planning
process, harnessing the talents and energies of all interested parties in order to
create and support a buildable plan.

Starting October 15th and continuing all week, Jamestown will be holding such a
charrette focused on the future of the Village. This planning and design process
has the primary goal of producing tools for the implementation of the town’s
Comprehensive Plan and Affordable Housing Plan. The principle tool will be an
update of the Commercial, R-8 and R-20 zoning districts. Several other
documents, such as Design Guidelines and an Architectural Pattern Book, will be
created to further guide future construction in the Village. These tools  are intended
to ensure that the character and tradition of the Village is respected.

It is essential that all voices be heard during this process. The charrette team
wants to know your hopes and concerns for the future.
